Dolce & Gabbana autumn and winter series published in 2016 Milan Fashion Week. Sometimes when fashion editors and critics take in runway shows, they’re hunting for the subtle little nods and references to arcane details or time periods that a designer might have slipped in (like the way a past Marc Jacobs’ set was an homage to legendary editrix Diana Vreeland’s apartment). That sort of under-the-radar inspiration was not happening at Dolce & Gabbana’s fall 2016 extravaganza, where the princess connection was major. From the large carriage and oversize story book dotting the set to the friendly forest creatures embroidered on models’ clothes, this was a big celebration of everything we love about Disney princesses and the like.
In total, there were multiple references to a handful of well-known fairy tales. Consider the icy blue dress and heels that borrow heavily from Cinderella’s iconic look and details we swear were inspired by Beauty and the Beast’s Mrs. Potts and Lumière. Most were obvious (like a mirror stitched with a version of Sleeping Beauty’s “Who’s the fairest of them all?” catchphrase), but it turned out that the house did opt for a bit of subtlety.
